As you prepare for this season, in addition to reviewing the USAV Rule Book, it may be time to take the next step and use the USAV Academy.  This training is an additional benefit of being a USAV member (it is not available to the general public). The site has information, training modules, and a link  that provides updates to the rules of the game. Please use this training and improve your officiating skills as soon as you register as a USAV member this season.
 
The training may be accessed by logging in to your Sports Engine account, then selecting the link to the USAV Academy.  This will take you to the Academy site where you will be able to enroll and complete the material.

Requirements to become a Certified Official in the Lone Star Region

Completed certifications are good for two seasons.
All items below must be fulfilled within the same season to complete a certification.
Scorer Referee
  1. Be a member of USA Volleyball, in the Lone Star Region
  2. Register for a clinic online or submit a scorer application
  3. Attend a LS Region Scorer clinic, take and correct the appropriate exam and pay applicable fees.  Payment for all clinics is at the clinic. There is “no” prepayment for a referee or scorer clinic.
  4. Submit completed score sheets from two sets and receiving a passing rating
    (the score sheets must be from an actual match and legible)
    All ratings must be submitted prior to 8/31.

Upon meeting all requirements an email will be sent to the email on the Sports Engine record and may be viewed any time by looking at the Credential column in the individual's SE account.

  1. Be a member of USA Volleyball, in the Lone Star Region

  3. Submit two individual ratings, one must be as an R1 for junior, provisional, and regional certification.  If referee candidacy is for Adult R2 or Junior R2 certification, then two- second referee ratings are required: These must be accomplished by two different raters.
     Junior, Adult R2 and Provisional Certification–must be rated by a Regional or higher-certified referee on a Lone Star Region rating form at a scrimmage, match, tournament, or any event using USAV rules; 
    Regional Certification–must be rated by Junior National or higher-certified referee (on the USAV rating form) in a tournament or match setting. Regional certifications must be accomplished while refereeing a 14’s or older age group for this rating.
  4. REGIONAL REFEREE REQUIREMENT
     For anyone moving up to Regional Referee, you “must” also obtain a Provisional SCORER certification.
    1. If you are a prior Regional referee, you “must” obtain a Provisional SCORER certification at the latest during the season of your re-certification.
    2. Regional Referees will not have to continue a scorer’s certification after the first two seasons unless you desire. However, you will be required to send 2 completed score sheets (from a live match) to the referee chair during the season of your re-certification.

We have scheduled 228 clinics in 61 cities this season.
 No excuses for missing a clinic!

New clinics are added throughout the season. 
If you wish to host a clinic, we will provide clinicians for either Scorer,
Referee or both.  The following are basic conditions for being a host:
1. Provide a site with a suitable place to project a Power Point presentation.

2. Have a minimum of 20 and maximum of 100 attendees for each clinic.
(There will be a fee of $5 for each vacant slot under 20, payable by the host)

3. All attendance requires advance reservations through Sports Engine.

4. Clinics must be open to all Region members and be posted on the Lone Star web site.

 5. You may limit the number of attendees to conform to venue size or local restrictions.  We will enforce those limitations in the USAV Academy.

6. There may be no additional fees charged for clinic attendance.

7. The application fee for certification is $25.  Anyone wishing to attend a clinic and not be certified will pay $5.

2. No more than 100 attendees at any clinic.

If the hosting club provides the information at least two weeks prior to the event, they will have 72 hours to allow their members register for the clinic before the clinic is posted on the web site.

If a clinician must travel a long distance to conduct a clinic or provide ratings, please consider providing some reimbursement for travel.

RE:                              Team Referees for 15 and under teams

Because of the adult and peer pressure that is sometimes put on officials in volleyball matches when 15 and under Junior referees are acting as the R1, and because many regions across the country already require coaches to be the first choice as a referee (R1, or R2 if a uniformed, paid referee is provided) for younger teams, the Lone Star Region requires coaches/roster adults of 15 and under junior teams to accept the role of primary referee for the team. If the coach is the R1, a younger player can be the R2 if they have attended a referee clinic.

Please have your team coaches of your 15 and under teams (or other adult listed on the team roster) plan on applying for certification, or re-certification as the case may be, as a referee. This process includes that they 1) renew if currently certified, or 2) apply as a referee, attend a referee clinic, take the referee exam and correct it as needed, complete two ratings (one must be as an R1), and join USAV.

We believe that you will agree that this is the best direction for us to take for the protection of the younger players and the integrity of the game. We hope that you will embrace this concept and participate fully as a club.
